The fifth annual Almost Heaven Trail Race was held on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at the St. Albans City Park. On a sunny, hot and humid morning, the race began at 8:00 a.m. with an uphill start to the challenging 5k (3.1 mile) course. Nearly 160 people registered for the event that circles the hill sides that encompass the City Park. With this being one of the first races held in the Kanawha Valley in 2020, more than half of those registered participated in the actual event while the remainder chose the virtual option.
The course traversed the primarily single-track trails throughout the Park. With very little flat ground, the runners navigated the rock and root strewn course. This was the first of the four race St. Albans series and helped prepare the runners for the remaining races in the summer and fall.
The first male runner was Jonathan Fee with a time of 22:21. The first female runner was Baylee Adkins who completed the course in 27:52.
The proceeds from this event benefits the Almost Heaven Scholarship Fund which recently issued 6 scholarships to West Virginia High School graduates who will be attending college in this state.
