Thirty hearty souls ventured to Kanawha State Forest in Charleston on Saturday, October 3 to challenge the elements and the course in the first Family Fitness Festival 10k and 5k races. The Festival helped raise money for the Almost Heaven Scholarship Fund.
While the 5k race was more family friendly with half the race on the roads and the other half on Davis Creek Trail, the 10k course had climbs with grades exceeding 18% which will challenge even the most fit racer. Making the day even more difficult was the steady rain and the terrain which had been soaked by heavy rains on the previous day.

As a result of this year’s event, which raised nearly $1,000 for scholarships for low income high school seniors in West Virginia who wish to attend a college or university in this state, plans are underway for next year’s Festival.
